The accumulation of heavy metals by terrestrial nitrogen-fixing alga Nostoc commune Vauch. in the East European Tundra
ABSTRAKT
First data concerning the accumulation of heavy metals and their influence on nitrogen accumulation in Nostoc commune Vauch. in the East European Tundra are presented. Elements studied range up to the biophyllous line: Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu>Ni>Co>Pb>Cd. Heavy metals concentrations in N. commune sampled in the conventionally clean territories were constant and varied little, whereas in thallus from polluted areas accumulation of the majority of the studied metals in N. commune varied. The correlation analysis has discovered the effect of higher than usual concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cu on nitrogen accumulation. N. commune, which is widely distributed in Arctic regions and is able to accumulate heavy metals in various concentrations, is proposed as a model species for the monitoring of heavy metals pollution in tundra ecosystems.
