Its applicability is confined to the case where the cross-section of one waveguide is completely inscribed into that of another waveguide. If the intersection of the two waveguides coincides with neither of them, then, as a rule, a "virtual" zero-length waveguide is artificially introduced into consideration between the jointed waveguides such that the formed new junctions would satisfy the applicability condition of the mode-matching technique. However the approach like this requires inversions of three matrices which procedure requires additional computational time. This study analyzes a possibility of using a generalization of the mode-matching technique to the case of waveguide junctions with superimposed cross-sections which leads to a set of linear algebraic equations of the first kind. It is proved that the two approaches are equivalent. At that the suggested method proves to be more efficient as compared with the tradition approach consisting in introducing a "virtual" waveguide into consideration. The results obtained in the paper make it possible to improve the efficiency of the automated design systems which are based on the mode-matching technique.
