Numerical Modelling of Induction Heated Thermal Valve of Vitrification Melters
ABSTRAKT
In this research work, experimental and numerical studies on induction heated thermal valve (also called as freeze valve) have been carried out for optimizing the operational parameters and safe operation of thermal valve under different operating conditions. Thermal valve section is the bottom most part of the melter and it is used for pouring of vitrified waste into the SS canisters. Numerical analysis of the thermal valve has been carried out using COMSOL Multiphysics software and simulation results were validated with the experimental results of test conducted on thermal valve. Experimental results were obtained by heating the thermal valve pipe under varying input voltage condition applied to induction coil and temperatures at different elevation of thermal pipe were recorded using N-type thermocouple. Using this validated numerical model, induction heating characteristics of thermal valve have been analysed by carrying out parametric studies under different input voltage conditions like, voltage applied to upper coil alone, voltage applied to lower coil alone and combinations of voltage applied to both upper and lower coil. Based on this study, available time margin between operating temperature and trip temperature of thermal valve for different input voltages have been evaluated.
