ABSTRAKT

In the Phebus experiments fission products and structural materials from a realistic source enter the containment vessel in the form of aerosol particles. In order to understand the subsequent behaviour of these particles it is necessary to know the thermalhydraulic conditions within the vessel. In particular the deposition by turbulent impaction depends on the velocity field and steam condensation onto aerosols depends on the relative humidity. Both these mechanisms influence the rate at which particles are removed from the atmosphere.
Both calculations and experiments are described. The calculations, made with different computer codes, highlight the deficiencies of these codes and their sensitivity to the choice of heat and mass transfer correlations.
