ABSTRAKT
Wind tunnel tests have been carried out to investigate the effect of grid generated turbulence on the fluidelastic instability of a tube bundle. A bundle of triangular tube layout, with a pitch to diameter ratio of 1.25, was used in every test and a range of grids were used in order to promote a range of turbulence scales and intensities.
Results are presented which show that, depending on the scale and intensity of the turbulence, the critical flow velocity for fluidelastic vibration of tubes in the first row of the bundle can be lowered by as much as 30% but can also be raised by up to 5%.
