ABSTRAKT

This study is concerned with flame stabilization. A simple configuration used extensively for studying laminar flames in the laboratory is the flat premixed flame sustained on top of a porous plug burner. The mass flux through the burner, and hence through the flame, controls the flame location. In some circumstances the flame remains planar and stationary, but often it undergoes spontaneous oscillations moving back and forth in a direction normal to the plate. The oscillations may amplify as the flow rate increases leading eventually to blowoff, but under other conditions the amplitude of oscillations reaches a maximum and then decreases by further increasing the flow rate until the flame re-stabilizes. The two modes of stabilization, stationary and oscillatory flames, as well as the phenomenon of flame re-stabilization are also predicted to occur in more complex geometries, such as edge-flames in two-dimensional mixing layers. The example presented here is of a flame stabilized in a corner where the fuel and oxidizer are injected from separate streams perpendicular to each other.
