USING TECHNOLOGY TO STRENGTHEN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE INSTRUCTION IN ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

The College of New Jersey is one of 14 agencies identified as sites that offer professional development to teachers in science, mathematics, and technology as part of the New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative. A guiding principle of this initiative is that an understanding of fundamental scientific principles and the development of science-related skills are not limited by gender, economic status, cultural background, or ability. The following research question was asked: “Can the study of technology be used to strengthen instruction in mathematics and science in the elementary and middle schools, especially for women and members of underrepresented groups?” Findings indicate that once teachers begin to implement the program in the classroom, students begin to construct knowledge of mathematics and science through the use of design and problem solving in technology.
