SUPPRESSION OF PULSATIONS GENERATED BY EXTERNAL ACOUSTIC WAVES IN A HYPERSONIC SHOCK LAYER

ABSTRACT

The problem of development of disturbances excited in a flat plate hypersonic viscous shock layer by external acoustic waves is considered. A direct numerical simulation of the propagation of disturbances is performed by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with a high-order shock-capturing scheme. The processes of receptivity and instability development are investigated in the case of shock layer excitation by the external acoustic waves and periodic blowing/suction perturbations generated on the plate surface near its leading edge. Mechanisms of generation and development of disturbances in the shock layer at hypersonic velocities are discussed. Results of the performed simulations show that an active control of transition to turbulence in a hypersonic shock layer can be done with the periodic blowing/suction near the leading edge that enables the development of instability excited by the free-stream acoustic disturbances to be suppressed by means of destructive interference.
