SINOPSIS

The three-year work of V. P. Shestopalov's school on the development and experimental research of the diffraction radiation oscillator (DRO) is surveyed, which includes the studies on the physics of DRO operation, especially at frequencies below critical, and on extension of the tuning range and enhancement of the output power. The performance of the best electronic devices is estimated in terms of the ratio between the efficiency and the squared optimal wavelength, which is considered as a function of relative velocity. In this unified parameter, the latest DROs are shown to double the performance of the appreciated diffraction-electronics instruments.
