Schumann Resonance and Lighting Strokes in Mesosphere

SINOPSIS

We analyze the electromagnetic radiation of lightning strokes. Its low frequency component increases with an extension of the channel length. This effect is conditioned by finite speed of motion of the current wave along the channel. The motion combined with the bending of the channel (staircase stroke) produce an increase in the number of radiated pulses. Electric field in the vicinity of a stroke rotates itself in longitudinal and transverse directions. Therefore, the electric vector "scans" the sky facilitating a focusing of free charged particles. The effects vanish at the ground surface and in the air right above the stroke. They may be observed in the air at the few kilometers distance from the stroke. A conclusion is made that the strokes causing optical emissions and powerful electromagnetic LF pulses should belong to the staircase lightning strokes, i.e., they must have a great length and multiply bent channel. Finally it is shown that initially multiple pulses radiated by such strokes rapidly become a single waveform when propagating in the Earth-ionosphere duct. Therefore a remote observer cannot resolve single pulses from energetic lightning strokes from the series of pulses produced by staircase strokes.
