DURALIUM BEHAVIOR IN MULTISTAGE ARTIFICIAL AGING PROCESS
SINOPSIS
Duralium is an aluminum alloy that has been used widely in automotive and aerospace industries. As to the properties, it has high strength and ductility and also a light weight. The mechanical properties of duralium can be improved by applying the aging process. Multistage aging of duralium consists of heat treatment at a temperature of 550°C and quenching followed by aging at 150°C for 10 h with three steps of the aging process. The sample morphology was analyzed by using optical microscopy and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Phase identification of duralium was obtained from X-Ray diffraction (XRD), whereas the mechanical properties were obtained from a tensile test, hardness test, and an impact test. The morphology of duralium in the multistage process showed the increment in precipitate with circular grains. The average particle size obtained from the Scherer equation laid in the range 18–33 nm. Phase identification showed different major peaks in the multistage aging process. There was a weakened peak intensity phenomenon, whereby under aging conditions, the major peak happened at [220], [311], and [323], indicating the precipitate intensity. The highest tensile strength was obtained for duralium at the first aging stage, the highest hardness number was obtained for duralium at the third aging stage, and the highest toughness was obtained for it at the first aging stage. This research introduced new method to improve the duralium properties by a multistage aging process at 150°C for 10 h.
