OPTIMAL DESIGN OF LAMINATED COMPOSITES

SINOPSIS

An optimal design method of orthotropic laminated panels in a plane stress state according to the strength condition is presented. The design parameters are: ply orientation angles, ply thicknesses, and the number of plies. The criterion of optimality is the minimum of the panel thickness. The strength constraint is the quadratic criterion of a ply strength that takes into account the extension and compression strength of the material. The directed sorting method with the refining search by the conjugate directions method is used to solve the problem. The numerical results are presented for different load cases. The proposed method allows one to find a number of equivalent optimal structures and it is confirmed by the results.
