Energy Balance and Ecological Efficiency of Pelagic Communities in the Black Sea

SINOPSIS

Based on the analysis of the energy and matter streams at different trophic levels, it is stated that the gross production of phytoplankton became triple, and along with this the lowered efficiency of its utilization lowered at all trophic levels of the ecosystem of the Black Sea in 1992-1994 as compared to 1979. An increased formation of detritus is observed; however, a share of idle detritus in the pelagic zone has risen from 5 to 12% for the last twenty years. Net fish proportion dropped from 2.34·1012 kJ to 0.42·0112 kJ.
