POWER-LAW FLUID PRESSURE BEHAVIOR IN HOMOGENOUS RESERVOIR WITH SPHERICAL FLOW
SINOPSIS
Studies have revealed most wells are usually completed with limited or restrictedentry and it isoften characterized with spherical flow behavior. High-viscosity crude by itsnature may exhibit non-Newtonian flow behavior. A fall-off test in a polymer injection well with partial completion may also exhibit spherical flow. We therefore present pressure transient analysis for spherical flow behavior of non-Newtonian power-law fluids in a homogenous reservoir. We incorporate the kin and wellbore storage effect into the Laplacian space analytical solution derived by Liu (Liu, C.-q., Appl. Math. Mech., vol. 9, no. 6, pp. 521−525, 1988). New pressure-type and pressure-derivative−type curves are developed for the different flow behavior index of power-law fluids in homogenous reservoirs. The log-log plot of the pressure derivative for the homogenous system gives a slopeof −0.5 at the spherical flow straight line, as expected for Newtonian fluid flow in a porous medium; whereas, the slope of non-Newtonian fluid at the spherical flow regime is a function of its flow behavior index. We further develops equations to estimate reservoir, wellbore, and power-law flow parameters using type curve matching and Tiab'sdirect synthesis technique, which uses an analytical solution of a longtime approximation in evaluating well test data from the log-log plot of the pressure and pressure derivative.
