SINOPSIS

Parameterized models are commonly used to represent the soil water retention curve (SWRC), a key relationship for describing the behavior of unsaturated soils. This paper proposes an empirical relationship between two widely used SWRC models proposed by Brooks and Corey (BC) and by Fredlund and Xing (FX). The BC model offers an attractive option for analytical and numerical methods due to its simple functional form, whereas the FX model provides a steady and continuous function that is valid for a wide range of suction. Therefore, it is desirable to find a relationship between the BC and FX models. The fitting parameters of the BC and FX models were determined using nonlinear least squares optimization for 601 soil samples of 10 different soil textures from the unsaturated soils hydraulic database (UNSODA). Then, the fitting parameters of the BC and FX models for all soil samples were employed to develop an empirical relationship to estimate the BC parameter (λ) from the FX parameters (m; n). Comparison of fitted and estimated λ showed that the empirical equation reasonably reproduces the characteristics of the BC model from the FX parameters. The proposed relationship can be applied to analytical and numerical methods, or when the SWRC measurements are not available.
