DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTIGATION OF AN IMPROVED LHP-PHP HEAT-TRANSFER SYSTEM
SINOPSIS
The paper presents the results of development and tests of a heat-transfer system consisting of a pulsating (PHP) and a loop (LHP) heat pipe. A PHP of the closed-loop type was joined to an aluminum plate measuring 200×260×3 mm. The PHP realized heat collection from a surface of 300 cm2 and its transfer to the thermal interface of the LHP evaporator. Then the heat was transferred to a heat sink for a distance of 0.8 m. R152a was used as the PHP working fluid. The LHP was filled with ammonia. Tests were conducted at three orientations in the gravity field: bottom, horizontal and top heat modes. It was found that the maximum heat-transfer capacity of the system, with allowance for the heat losses, was about 250W. The minimum start-up heat load of the system was about 20W and ensured a successful start-up at any orientation. In a heat load range approximately from 50 to 170W the system was low sensitive to the orientation and had a thermal resistance of about 0.25±0.05 K/W.
