SINOPSIS
To test coal/petcoke co-firing in power plants, ENEL has performed a detailed testing campaign in its 5 MWt boiler simulator facility. The experiments demonstrated that, without air staging, coal/petcoke co-firing is feasible up to 30% petcoke. Air staging had a stronger negative impact on Unburned Carbon than did the percentage of petcoke in the fuel blend. In staged combustion configurations, fouling in the first part of the convective section was also found.
On the basis of the outcomes of the experimental campaign, a modeling study was performed to evaluate the impact of coal/petcoke co-firing on boiler performances.
