CO2-FOAM INJECTION FOR ENHANCING OIL RECOVERY: A BRIEF REVIEW
SINOPSIS
CO2-foam injection as a potential technique for enhancing oil recovery and carbon capture and storage has been proposed for overcoming the challenges involved during the process of CO2 flooding. The positive impact of CO2 foaming for enhancing oil recovery has been established by numerous experimental and theoretical studies and also by few pilot and field cases. However, there are still not sufficient data for solving the operational and conceptual issues. This may be the main reason for a not wide use of CO2 foams for field applications. Mechanisms involved in CO2-foam injection, instability and collapse of foam under reservoir conditions, fluid flow behavior, and finding the best foaming agents are the main issues of this process. This paper presents a literature review of the most recent studies on the performance of CO2 foams for EOR applications, foam instability challenge and ways to solve it, and foam behavior in porous media. It also reveals the gaps in knowledge which could be helpful for future studies.
