Planing on the Surface of a Compressible Fluid
SINOPSIS
The paper suggests a quantitative estimation, within the limits of applicability of the isoentropic state equation for water, of hydrodynamic characteristics and the value of the nose overpressure of a planing plate of a finite extension at subsonic and supersonic velocities with an attached and detached compression shock. At the numbers M ≤ 1.5 for water, dependencies between the flow's slope in the compression shock and the shock's slope have been plotted, as well as a dependency of the M number at which the shock attaches to the plate vs. the trim angle. Young's method has been generalized onto the motion near the free boundary, which takes account of the finiteness of the plate's extension.
