Fossil coccolithophorides (Coccolithophorales) - indicators of climatic changes in Eocene paleobasins of southern regions of the CIS
SINOPSIS
Paleoecological analysis was carried out on fossil coccolithophorides (nannoplankton), found in Eocene deposits of the Carpathians, Crimea, Ukraine platform, Northern Caucasus, Armenia and Eastern Caspian area in the region of the south-facing slope of the Gissar Ridge (Tajikistan). Ecological groups of taxa peculiar to equatorial-tropical, subtropical and temperate biogeographical zones were differentiated. It has been found that in the Early and Middle Eocene periods warm water paleobasins of the tropical zone occurred throughout the whole investigated territory, except for the Eastern Caspian area. In the middle of the Early Eocene period the mentioned area was connected with cool waters of the Northern Atlantic. Dramatic shrinkage of tropical and subtropical zones and onset of the temperate zone is typical for Late Eocene paleobasins, except for Armenia, where warm conditions of aquatic medium stayed intact.
