SINOPSIS

In experimental periphyton plates exhibited in two bays of the Sea of Japan, different in degrees of eutrophication (the Golden Horn Bay is extremely-eutrophic and the Sukhoputnaya Bay is moderately-eutrophic) 73 species and intraspecific taxa of algae belonging to Bacillariophyta (66 taxa), Dinophyta (5), and Chrysophyta (2) were revealed. Forty-eight species were found in the Golden Horn Bay and 66 species in the Sukhoputnaya Bay. Forty common species were found in the two bays. Diatoms such as Amphora caroliniana Giffen, Falcula media Voigt var. subsalina Proschk.-Lavr., Gyrosigma tenuissimum (W. Sm.) Griff. et Henfr., and Nitzschia hybrida f. hyalina Proschk.-Lavr. were reported for the first time in Russian waters of the Sea of Japan. The density of microalgae was three times higher and biomass was 5.5 times lower in the Golden Horn Bay than in the Sukhoputnaya Bay. In an extremely-eutrophic water body the density of microalgae was from 0.1 to 19.4 mln ccells·m−2 and biomass was from 0.18 to 9.6 mg·m−2; the values of Shannon (H) and of Pielou (e) indices were H = 1.71 and e = 1.76 for diatoms, respectively, in moderately-eutrophic basins − from 0.6 to 23.9 mln cells·m−2, biomass − from 1.96 to 49.2 mln cells·m−2; H= 0.41 and e = 0.51.
