Primary production was determined in the samples containing various dimensional fractions of algae. Samples were filtered through the miller's gauze N 72, and also through the nucleopore filters with 4.5 μm sieve openings. It has been found that the contribution of small fractions of phytoplankton to the total production of organic matter is rather high. A high specific production of small fractions of algae (22.2−567 days−1) is conditioned by a relatively high content of chlorophyll in their cells (1.4−9.8 %) as compared to larger fractions (2.5−320 days−1 and 0.37−5.40 %, respectively), and also by a higher intensity of transformation of the absorbed energy. %8 2004-11-04
