The jet exit velocity is from 2 to 20 m/s, with the Reynolds number being from 2.1 × 103 to 2.1 × 104 based on the initial jet width. The impinging jet is locally excited at the nozzle exit of the jet flow by two arrays of small loudspeakers at various frequencies. In succession to our previous works, in this study, combined impingement and acoustic excitation reveal the competition of instability waves between the jet and the cylinder wake in the near field of the jet flow. The smoke-wire visualization provides clear qualitative interaction flow behaviors from the instantaneous flow pictures taken at different times. While in the quantitative analysis, the cross hot-wire anemometers in velocity measurements specifically present the detailed physical flow properties. Comparison of the relevant results obtained by these two methods is extensively studied in the paper.
