Aqueous starch syrup solutions of viscosities ranging from 0.25 to 0.91 Pa s and aqueous carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) solutions were used. Photographic observation indicated that the drop formation of highly viscous liquids resembles that of low-viscosity liquids, although the range in which ligaments form stably is rather narrow. The drop sizes of highly viscous Newtonian liquids in the ligament formation mode agree with the prediction based on the stability theory of a liquid jet, provided the ligament number is estimated correctly. However, the highly viscous liquids often hinder prediction of the correct number of ligaments. For the non-Newtonian CMC solutions, the drop sizes are larger than that predicted by more than 40%. %8 1992-03-01
