SINOPSIS

The basic phenomena occurring in reflux condensation in a vertical tube side condenser have been studied experimentally. The pyrex made annular single tube condenser (inner tube I.D. 1.76 cm and outer tube I.D. 10.16 cm) was used in present study. In order to study in detail the phenomena, the boundary conditions at both ends in this condenser are artificially controlled. The pressure, temperatures inside the inner tube are monitored along the axis together with secondary side heat flux distribution. The void fraction was measured by a capacitance method. The range of parameters of the present work cover total pressure drop across the condenser from 0 to 30 kPag at several system pressure levels, the plenum volume from 6 to 52.2 l, and the total heat removal of 2 to 5 kw. A simple theoretical analysis by a lumped parameter model has been conducted.
