In this article the potential of applying knowledge-based techniques for operator support functionalities is discussed. The requirements for and constraints on knowledge-based systems in highly dynamic, real-time applications in complex and distributed process environments are presented. The aspect of taking into account the operator abilities for overall man-machine system performance is emphasized and with an example results from a research project are illustrated. Finally, considerations of applying recent technologies such as neural networks and fuzzy systems in large-scale dynamic environments are provided.
