SINOPSIS

The sedimentation of the binary mixture of particles in air has been experimentally studied. The measurements were conducted by use of Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA). The spherical glass and iron particles with nominal diameters of 100 μm have been used as fractions of the binary mixture. Mass loading of the mixture was varied within wide range. The experiments clearly showed that the free-fall velocity of the particles is quite different for dense conditions compared with dilute conditions or single particle motion. The experiments detected an essential increase of the glass particles velocity in the binary mixture due to their acceleration by the iron particles at high disperse phase concentration. The obtained results may be used for the verification of the particle-particle collision mechanism.
