Corrosion of Boiler Steel by Vanadate Compounds

Fireside deposits containing sodium vanadate compounds generally reduce the rate of heat transfer and cause catastrophic corrosion problems in steam boilers and gas turbines, Tests of corrosion caused by different vanadate compounds were conducted on a heat-resistant steel for boiler tubes in air in the temperature range of 500−800°C. It has been demonstrated that corrosion of steel is accelerated in presence of vanadium bronzes compared to other vanadium compounds. The effect is not directly related to the temperature, and a sharp decrease in corrosion rate was observed at the melting point of the bronze compound followed by a linear increase of corrosion with temperature. This was attributed to the nascent oxygen liberated upon solidification of the vanadate bronzes. Other vanadate compounds and V2O5 did not show the same behaviour. The mechanism of corrosion has been proposed.
