SINOPSIS

Simulation was made for non-isothermal air jet of the Reynolds number set 1200, 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000 to reveal coherent structures in its developed regime. For the case of low Reynolds number, visualization was made by dye contamination and PTV, and experimental results supported the numerical validity. For the cases of higher Reynolds number, numerical result was confirmed to agree with existing literatures. Coherent structures are examined through three-dimensional mapping of vortex tube, instantaneous distribution of velocity vectors and temperature, two-point correlation of temperature, and probability density function of vorticity vector angle. Conceptual model of coherent structures in developed jet was thus proposed; (1) There appeared frequently hairpin shape structures in developed jet, and they enhanced momentum transport and scalar mixing: (2) Hairpin-shape structures are dominant for low Reynolds number, but incompleteness of structures grows as the Reynolds number increases.
