SINOPSIS

Recent developments in material and energy costs demand efficient heat transfer apparatus. The question addressed in this study was if standard pipe fittings such as 180°- and 90°-bends can be used to build alternatively coiled heat exchangers with enhanced heat transfer. For that purpose a water channel was constructed. It was found that by employing standard fittings, an enhancement of heat transfer compared to standard coiled tube heat exchangers between 2 and 20 % can be obtained. However, the heat transfer enhancement is restricted to inner Reynolds numbers below 6.000.
