On the use of Launder-Sharma k − ε model to simulate drag reduction phenomenon in turbulent pipe flows

SINOPSIS

Until recently, theoretical studies have failed to quantitatively predict the huge reduction in the friction drag as witnessed in turbulent pipe and duct flows through the use of certain high-molecular-weight polymeric additives. Pinho (2003) modified the Generalized Newtonian Fluid (GNF) model in such a way that it could take into account a fluid's elasticity. When combined with the low-Reynolds k − ε turbulence model of Nagano-Hishida (1987), numerical predictions could predict, even quantitatively, the drag reduction phenomenon for several polymeric additives. But for certain other polymers the predictions were not so great. In the present work, it will be shown that for the cases where the Nagano-Hishida model performs poorly, better predictions can be obtained using Launder-Sharma k − ε model. The work clearly shows that the selection of the turbulence model plays a crucial role when simulating turbulent flows of viscoelastic fluids.
