Analysis of the turbulent flow through a turn-around duct by contrasting different modelling approaches
SINOPSIS
Data of Monson, Seegmiller and McConnaughey (1989) for a 180° turn-around duct formed from a rectangular channel has served as one of favorite benchmarks for Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) turbulence models in the last few decades. Despite a good agreement between predictions and measurements for the velocity and pressure, as obtained with some advanced RANS turbulence models, turbulent kinetic energy has been always poorly predicted. All calculations for this case so far reported, have never been successfully completed for all measured quantitates. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to assess if this disagreement can be addressed to RANS models or to measurements. This is done by using a relatively new Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model, namely the Coherent Structure model of Kobayashi (2005).
