An Optimum Algorithm for Angle of Arrival Estimation in the Presence of Random Wave Front Distortions and Additive Noise

RÉSUMÉ

The algorithms for estimating the angles of arrival of spatially coherent signals in the presence of random noise are widely used in signal processing [1]. Contrary to that, the algorithms providing angle-of-arrival estimates for partially coherent signals, based on the analysis of their phase fronts with the additive noise neglected, are less developed and less frequently employed [2, 3]. Both approaches proceed from essential idealizations of the real measuring conditions. Paper [4] presents the theoretical foundations of the measurements for the general case of a combined action of the additive noise and multiplicative noise, however, requiring derivation of explicit relations to determine specific features of the measuring algorithms for various conditions, with the relevant numerical estimates. We have developed and analyzed an algorithm for measuring the angle of arrival with account both of random wave front distortions and of additive noise for the case of a uniform linear array antenna with symmetrically distributed current amplitudes and zero cross-correlation of noise between the antenna channels. The limits of validity of the two above mentioned simplified approaches have been established numerically.
