MULTI-CYCLE EXPERIMENTS ON MULTI-TUBE PULSE DETONATION ENGINE

RÉSUMÉ

Multi-cycle experiments on a multi-tube pulse detonation engine (PDE) were carried out. The PDE consisted of four detonation tubes. They were ignited sequentially with the operation frequency of 120−200 Hz (30−50 Hz/tube). The exhaust gas flows from the detonation tubes were combined in a cone-shaped collecting duct, to the exit of which a straight exhaust duct was connected. In order to investigate the controllability of pressure pulses in the PDE system, an orifice was installed at the exit of the straight exhaust duct. In the experiments, the size of the orifice, the length of the straight exhaust duct, and the operation frequency were varied, and pressure histories at the exit of the straight exhaust duct (upstream of the orifice) were measured. The following were found out. The strength and timing of a pressure pulse at the exit of the straight exhaust duct (upstream of the orifice) were, to some extent, controllable by varying the size of the orifice and the length of the straight exhaust duct. Smaller orifices made the operation stability of the multi-tube PDE lower. The back-pressurization of the PDE system was realized by high-frequency operation of a PDE with an orifice at the exit.
