RÉSUMÉ

Ultrasonic measurements show a very good quality/cost ratio and are a non-intrusive technique that supplies the thickness variation and thermal behaviour of different materials inside the motor. They provide a comprehensive amount of data concerning the internal behaviour of the motor, such as instantaneous behaviour of internal thermal insulation wherever in the motor and instantaneous ballistic behaviour of the propellant grain during the test. This study deals particularly with 'Great-depth' transducers, which allow measurement of propellant up to 1-m thick. It covers acquisition from ignition to the end of a firing test, even on the largest motors such as ArianeV-P230 or VEGA-P80. 'Great-depth' ultrasonic measurement enables the replacement of heavy specific tests like live radiography or combustion stopped by drowning. Furthermore, it provides a large amount of live data from large-scale tests that could be included in simulation software in order to improve ballistic performance predicting. Knitline effect and edge effect, which generate local higher burning rate, are particularly tackled in this study.
