RÉSUMÉ

Dr. James N. Miller has influenced the lives of many syphilologists, both directly and indirectly. His groundbreaking investigations, which spanned five decades, established the foundation for syphilis knowledge, unveiled the first layer of mystery surrounding the biology of the causative agent of syphilis, Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum, and set the stage for future investigations of this stealth pathogen. A remarkable number of his experimental predictions and biological observations, that stemmed from his careful study of the disease resulting from host infection with T. pallidum, have been borne out and further revealed through subsequent later studies conducted by his descendants in the field of syphilis research. This tribute to Dr. James N. Miller details a select few of his foundational studies and attempts to place them in the context of current-day syphilis research.
