ULTIMATE LENGTH FOR REPORTING GAS PERMEABILITY OF CARPINUS BETULUSWOOD
RÉSUMÉ
The effects of specimen length on gas permeability of Carpinus betulus is reported on the basis of a study on 22.5 cm longitudinal specimens from six trees. In a decreasing process, the length of specimens was cut by 5 mm to reach to the final length of 3 cm; specific permeability values of each step were measured. Results show that longitudinal gas permeability of sapwood, for 3 cm specimens, is 219,585.31 × 10−13(m3m−1) whereas the value for heartwood is 54% lower (118,852.30 × 10−13m3m−1). Radial gas permeability values for 3 cm specimens were also measured to be 5.32 × 10−13(m3m−1) whereas those of heartwood were 55% lower (2.94 × 10−13m3m−1). Both sapwood and heartwood show the same increase pattern in their longitudinal gas permeability values as the length of the specimens decrease. Correlation coefficients show that 62% of longitudinal gas permeability values depend on length. On the other hand, considering the lowest specimen length of 5 cm, 90% of longitudinal permeability values are justified by specimen length. Therefore, it can be concluded that 5 cm long specimens give a better scope of the specific gas permeability value in Carpinus betulus.
