Chute Quench Design Recommendations

RÉSUMÉ

It has been shown that the quenching mechanism of aqueous polymer quenchants, particularly PAG quenchants, facilitate uniform heat transfer. The quench system is properly designed to provide adequate heat transfer and agitation. It was shown through previously conducted work by Illgner that even parts with relatively small cross-section sizes are not through-quenched in the chute zone. Polymer quenchants can be used in continuous chute-quench system if adequate temperature control and agitation are present in the chute zone. Recommended design guidelines and illustrative examples have been provided. Although the focus of this work was on polymer quenchants, the same guidelines can be applied to oil quench system for improved performance.
