RÉSUMÉ

Natural convection experiments were conducted in air over a uniformly heated, vertical surface covered with micro-grooved films. The groove orientations were placed both parallel and perpendicular to the flow direction. V-grooves with depths of 18 μm to 150 μm (0.0007 to 0.006 in) were used. The results showed that natural convection enhanced 20% and overall heat transfer (including radiation) enhanced 8% when 150 μm micro-grooves were used. Smaller grooves provided less enhancement. The augmentation of heat transfer is believed to be caused predominantly by the increased surface area, rather than by the flow structure, since orientation had little effect on the results.
