SURFACE FLOWS INSIDE AUTOMOTIVE TORQUE CONVERTERS
RÉSUMÉ
The wall tracing method uses the solid epoxy tracking technique to visualize the torque converter internal flow along the wall of flow passages. Some of the flow phenomena, such as crossing, swirling, reversing, and separation, have been interpreted by studying traces of flow along the wall. These adversary flow patterns convert mechanical energy into undesireable heat and reduce efficiency. The understanding of torque converter internal flow phenomena is the fundamental requirement for achieving fuel-efficient converter design. The feasibility of this method is established based on the test data of two squashed torque converter designs, and results of fluid flow phenomena are presented.
