HYPERSONIC FLOW AROUND A BLUNTED AXISYMMETRIC BODY AT AN ANGLE OF ATTACK

RÉSUMÉ

The influence of the angle of attack on the flow field structure and local aerodynamic characteristics of a model of the Mars Pathfinder probe in flight regimes modeled in hypersonic wind tunnels based at TsAGI is studied by means of numerical simulations with dynamic equations of a viscous perfect gas. The computations cover the following ranges of similarity parameters: 6 ≤ M ≤ 19.8, 104 ≤ Re ≤ 107, and 0 ≤ α ≤ 20°. In particular, three different structures of the near wake are demonstrated to form in the plane of symmetry in the examined interval of the angles of attack. These structures have the following distinctive features: (1) closed zone of a global separated flow (α = 0); (2) gas overflow from the lower side of the body contour to the upper side (α = 5 and 10°); and (3) non-closed zone of a global separated flow (α = 15 and 20°).
