Ethics of Hostage Taking
RÉSUMÉ
The purpose of this paper is to explore three main questions: why do we consider that hostage taking is morally wrong, why do we consider that executing hostages is morally wrong, and why do we consider that making public the execution videos of hostages is morally wrong? In order to examine these questions I will develop my argument in four sections. In the first I briefly introduce the legal provisions on the prohibition of hostage taking, in the second I explore the moral wrongness of detaining innocent people without good reason, in the third I analyze the moral wrongness of hostage taking, and in the fourth I investigate the moral wrongness of killing hostages and making the execution scenes public.
