RÉSUMÉ

Reactions in three immiscible liquid phases (L-L-L) are attractive and one of the phases can be the locale of reaction, which will have a dramatic effect on product distribution in complex reactions. Thus, converting a biliquid system into a triliquid phases is of considerable scientific and commercial interest. In L-L-L phase transfer catalysis (PTC), the catalyst forms a middle phase between the other two phases. L-L-L PTC offers much higher rates of reaction as well as better selectivities. Dibenzylation of resorcinol with benzyl chloride was studied in detail in an attempt to develop the same desirable qualities of L-L-L PTC. 1,3-Dibenzyloxybenzene is an important pharmaceutical intermediate, for a drug, based on C3-arylated-3-deazauridine derivatives, which is significantly active against herpes simplex (type I) virus in vitro and also in another drug which inhibits the growth of leukemia. The catalyst-rich middle phase is recycled many times, thereby leading to profitability. The current work deals with the effect of different kinetic and process parameters leading to enhancement in rates and selectivities and greener aspects of PTC. The dibenzylation of quinol and catechol was also covered to expand the scope of the current work. A mathematical model is also developed.
