Rehabilitation Approaches to the Prevention of Osteoporosis and Osteoporotic Fractures
RÉSUMÉ
Osteoporosis is a relatively common clinical disorder of low bone mass and poor bone quality, which result in skeletal fragility and increased fracture risk. Failure to identify and treat individuals with osteoporosis who are clearly at risk for fracture can lead not only to serious social and health problems but also burdensome health care costs. This article reviews the diagnosis and the pharmaceutical interventions for osteoporosis. It then details the literature related to improving peak bone mass and minimizing bone loss through exercise. A comprehensive review of falls in the elderly, including risk factors, prevention, and fall risk reduction, is included. This article concludes with specific recommendations related to osteoporosis prevention and treatment and fracture prevention.
