RÉSUMÉ

New Zealand has developed a comprehensive spinal service, including acute care, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up, based on total care concepts. While motor vehicle accidents remain the leading cause for traumatic spinal cord injuries (SCIs), sports-related injuries are no longer the second commonest cause for SCIs−they have been replaced by falls. The guiding principle of admitting patients to a spinal unit as soon as possible after the injury has been backed up by recent studies showing the major benefit of saving lives and reducing complications. The advance of spinal surgeries and urology management has revolutionized care for patients with SCIs. Comprehensive rehabilitation and systematic, organized follow-up have achieved remarkable outcomes for the health maintenance and quality of life of patients with SCIs. This article reviews the state of the art of spinal cord medicine in New Zealand, from acute to rehabilitation and from transitional programs to long-term follow-up. The review also reports the current statistics of patients with SCIs, highlights the causation characteristics, and discusses future strategic directions, which are important for the sustain-ability of spinal cord services in New Zealand.
