RÉSUMÉ

Emotion perception difficulties are common after brain injury and lead to difficulties in interpersonal communication, relationships, and participation in social roles. Developing effective rehabilitation is thus a priority. A few smaller studies and randomized controlled trials demonstrated change in clinic tests of emotion recognition. Work is required to further evaluate these treatments and integrate them more effectively with training on what to do once an emotion has been recognized in someone else. A program of research is laid out to take these issues forward, including development of assessment measures that can be reliably administered on multiple occasions, perhaps through multiple parallel forms, using evaluation methods such as single-case experimental designs to enable treatments in this area to evolve much more rapidly than can occur in randomized controlled trials. Technological solutions such as virtual environments may hold promise in this area, but the history of assistive technologies in rehabilitation suggests that research on the leading edge of technology rarely translates into usable rehabilitation products. This article, therefore, calls for efforts to be directed primarily at designing and evaluating the minimum viable treatment and beginning its translation to clinical practice to ensure effective treatment can be delivered in this area.
