RÉSUMÉ

Rehabilitation of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) patients has remained a challenge. To assess effectiveness of rehabilitation for HIE patients, chart reviews were done for HIE patients admitted for 2 years. Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R)/Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Ill (ACE-III), Wessex Head Injury Matrix (WHIM), and state of consciousness of patients in the initial assessment and predischarge assessment were analyzed. Statistical analysis was done with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and the McNemar test. Nineteen patients (11 male, 8 female) with a mean age of 30.2 ± 18.0 years were enrolled. Overall improvement in WHIM (p = 0.018), CRS-R (p = 0.038), and ACE scores (p = 0.043) were statistically significant. Change in state of consciousness was assessed in 11 patients and was found to be statistically significant (p = 0.031). Improvement in total MBI (p = 0.018) and dressing (p = 0.028) and grooming (p = 0.042) components were also statistically significant. HIE patients definitely improve in consciousness, cognition, and functional status with rehabilitation.
