Influence of metabolites of certain algae on human and animal cell cultures
RÉSUMÉ
Certain microscopic freshwater algae are promising sources of biologically active substances (BAS), including those having cytotoxic activity. It is shown that primary and implanted cultures of normal and tumor tissues may be used successfully as a biotest in primary screening in search of cytostatics. The sensitivity of algae to the cytotoxic action of BAS is higher in tumor cells than in cell cultures of normal tissues. Four complexes of BAS were isolated from algal cultures (Oscillatoria neglecta Lemm., Spirulina platensis (Nordst.) Geitl., Chlorella vulgaris Beijer.) and from phytoplankton biomass sampled during "water bloom" caused by Cyanophyta (represented mainly by Microcystis aeruginosa Kutz. emend. Elenk. 95%). Their cytotoxic activity was tested at tissue cultures Hela, Hep-2, Am-8. The maximum cytotoxic effect has been shown by BAS M. aeruginosa, and the minimum one - by BAS of Chlorella vulgaris Beijer.
