T1 Heat Transfer in Turbulent Flow Through Tube with Wire-Coil Inserts JF Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer JO JEH(T) YR 2005 FD 2006-01-11 VO 12 IS 4 SP 385 OP 394 AB An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the pressure drop and turbulent flow heat transfer to air in a tube with wire-coil inserts with a varying pitch. Four test sections with four mild steel wire coils of different pitches (P = 12, 24, 40, and 50 mm with corresponding helix angles, α = 10, 20, 35, and 450°) were fabricated. Air velocity, air inlet and outlet temperatures, local wall temperature, local coil-surface temperature, and the pressure drop were collected for tubes with wire-coil-inserts to analyze the friction factor, the Nusselt number, the heat-transfer coefficient, and the heat transfer effectiveness. The results indicated that as much as two-fold improvement might be obtained in the turbulent flow heat-transfer coefficient and the heat transfer effectiveness. A correlation was also developed for prediction of the heat-transfer coefficient in turbulent flow for tubes with wire-coil-inserts.
