It has been found that separate prophylactic introduction of either Bifidobacterium animalis VKL or Bifidobacterium animalis VKB for 14 days does not affect the stress-induced GM erosive and ulcerative lesions. However, prophylactic introduction of Bifidobacterium animalis VKL and VKB mixture is effective in protecting the GM from the damage. One of the gastroprotective mechanisms by these probiotic strains is prevention of mucus barrier from degradation, which is manifested as a decrease in free fucose and hexuronic acids content in the GM. The results obtained are the experimental confirmation of the expediency of the probiotics to prevent stress-induced lesions in the GM.
